I recently lost only one Cardinal Tetra the possibility was TB but there was a greater concern it was a water born bacteria because of the low water levels and the cold weather.

The recomendation from an importer (who I have known for 10 years) staited all I had to do to remove this bacteria was to bring the heat up to 28-30 for a month and this will kill all that bacteria.

Thats an odd piece of advice from the importer, basically because it could be any of several thousand bacteria, and their activity is often increased by an increase in temperature. Perhaps hes just giving you anecdotal evidence based on the improvement you get in the immune systems of said fish under such circumstances. Cold weather tends to cause a slowing of bacterial reproduction even though in some parasites like ich it can cause errors in reproduction and that may be mirrored by some strains of bacteria.

Still seems an odd conclusion to come to though, especially considering the potential factors involved. Would you pick any unidentified bacteria and assume higher temps that are still well within the tolerance ranges for most bacteria would help?

Odd, most odd. The chances of him being right are what? 100 to 1 maybe? I'm not saying he's wrong, perhaps he knows something about the local fauna that I dont, but it still seems his chances of being right are remote. Nature usually works the other way round.

Our water is crap at the moment. It is super packed with chloramine, I can smell it as soon as the tap is turned on. Although I am unsure of why, they have also put in copper. This explains why my catfish havent been very happy lately.
It wouldnt surprise me if there is bacteria in the water aswell, although I am unsure that raising the temp will fix it. You still face the problem of introducing it again when you do another water change.
I'm scared to do water changes, theres always a drama after it in my tanks. I think when we get to stage 4 water restrictions (which is august 1st) I will break down my main tank and maybe just keep a betta in a small tank or something.

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Going to Gym regually they always have trouble with bacteria and heated pool & spar.
Last two winters there has been a bacteria that only comes through the water when it is low and it is cold. This info I got from a water chemist from our water board. It could be breeding in the lower and colder levels of our water storages. Another LFS has told me they have tried to chase the problem and many LFS in our state are facing a similar problem. I know of one LFS that is installing tanks so that they can treat any nasties that come through the water to top up their display tanks. Yes the water does stink in fact I can not drink or cook with it I have to use a twin filter unit to remove most of the gunk I dont know if this removes the unknown bacteria.
