If the sponges are dead, I don't believe they have a chance of coming back.

I have picked up a piece of LR with some sponge on it too.... It has not grown any in 6 months, but I have not lost it either. It's only about the size of a quarter but has not changed a bid since I got it.

I would like to know if yours grows any.

One crab that you might want to keep if you get it is a Sally Lightfoot (Percnon gibbesi) as this is an algal grazer

One that you will most likly want to remove. Most crabs will become a problem in a tank. They may eat your fish as they sleep.

I'm not usually here in SW territory, but i the reason i got into fishkeeping is because i saw a BEAUTIFUL lionfish in a LFS. But anyway i wanted to ask what are some of the common hitch hikers on live rock? and what are some hitch hikers that you were REALLY excited about getting? If you have any thing else tell me. Please

I was one of the unlucky ones who got a mantis shrimp and didnt realise until about 3 weeks later when some of my fish disappeared ummmmmmmm wonder who ate them, well he is gone now and no more missing fish.

I've got corals, mushrooms, crabs, worms, a goby that hitchiked in the rock, and other stuff.

Almost every type of coral...because i used to work at a LFS and we usually get the fresh stuff and lots of corals come free on them.

I've gotten several snails, as well as a few very nice mushrooms, and a very nice open brain coral. And several small clams.

I know that mantis shrimp are not good for the average reef aquarium, they kill most invertibrates, snails, shrimp, crabs, ect... I mean personal experience like some nice nudibranches, shrimp, anenomes (good ones), clams, coral ect... and things like that.

Good hitch hikers include amphipods, various worms, the odd unusual colourful nudibranch, sometimes small hermit crabs, basically the whole of the invertebrate world is your oyster (pardon the pun!) with live rock if it's premium grade.

Watch out for Mantis Shrimps though - these things are equipped to tackle crabs for food. Which they deal with using a kind of club apparatus on the underside of the head to crack open the crab's carapace. This thing is a miniature underwater anti-tank missile system, and can deliver a blow equivalent to a direct strike from a .22 rifle bullet. Imagine your aquarium exploding when one of these decides to punch the front glass!
