Hi My teacher and me want to set up a 10g tank with Guppy's, Platy's, and Neon Tetra's (or Cardinal Tetra's). I was wondering how many of each should we put in the tank to make a good mix or if you have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance for all replys hope to see some soon!

If you're going with any livebearer you need all males as they'll quickly outpopulate the tank. I'd advise against livebearers.

As for cards or neons, a small school of 8-10 if the tank is planted, properly filtered (7-10X's an hour) and properly mantained.

The key with tanks away from home (ie office or school) is that they need very careful maintence to prevent them from having trouble while you're away. Even moreso when it's something as trecherous as a 10 gallon.

Large cardinals will make short work of guppy fry in such a small tank.

Thanks for the info are there any other fish combinations that would work out well in a 10g?

Well, 10 gal. is quite small for most fish, but i would keep only 1 school of fish & Cardinals or Rummynose Tetra's, are quite nice.

Thanks so much me and my teacher have decided to start out with the neon tetra's. About 5 or 6 of them is what were thinking. Does this sound like a good number? We were also thinking of adding some male guppys after the neons get settled and the tank is doing well. Is this ok and if it is how many males could go with the neon tetra's in the 10g?

Cardinal tetras are probably a better choice than the neons as in my experience cardinals are hardier than neons. I would say 6 is a good but make sure the tank is going to be a planted one.

Are you aware of the cycle process that a new tank will go through? Please stock the tank slowly or you'll have problems. Most of all have fun!

Lindy,
No I am not aware of cycle process but what we were going to do is set the tank up get the plants in there with the filter and everything and let it run for 2-3 weeks so that everything is running well. Is this a bad idea? Oh and what is the cycle process?

Tank in a classroom huh?

How about a titanium lid, reinforced glass, and some nice radioactivity warning stickers...

mebbe some razor wire ,and a big sign that says "anyone who taps on the glass will be shot in the face"

lol.

That and be a good example to others and see if you can make a success of fishless cycling. ( get the school to pay for the chemicals- that shows business initiative )

Remember to understock too, that tank might be unattended during holidays and weekends. Get a good reliable filter.

Take photos and poster them up near the tank so that people can see how its done and how long it takes and not to rush out and buy tanks and fish and chuck it all together in a day. Make it educational and get good fishkeeping principles into people before they get old and jaded and full of bad habits- like us lot !
