I'm thinking of getting a 46 bow. Are there any problems associated with a bow front tank? Anything that I should take into consideration? I will be upgrading from a 20 gal.!

(freshwater tank)

I've been happy with my little bowfront and plan on getting larger ones in the future. Nothing special about them as far as filtration or hardware goes. The only complaint I've had about them is that is does sometimes make it difficult to clearly see the animals inside, and they are impossible to photograph well, it seems.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

Do the fish appear really distorted or what? Would I be better off to get a standard rectangular tank?

Photography and aquscaping can be an extra challenge. Also make sure it is a "Glass" bow front as the plastic ones can scratch very easy.

Have a look in [link=My Profile]

I've only had experience with small (under 10g) bow tanks, but personally I don't like them because I've always had an awful time aquascaping them to my liking.

Unless you're getting a good price I don't think you gain anything with a bow tank. It's really a matter of preference, a different style like tall tanks, hexes, etc.

If that's not an issue, find out what size rectangular tank you could get for the same price and compare floor space of the two. For me that's a big important issue: more floor space=more fish

Thanks everyone! And, Theresa, you're right! More floor space=more fish and since you put it that way (and taking the other comments into consideration), I think I'll look for a rectangular tank!

I have a 49 gallon bow front and its great, i don't have problems with it and it really fits well with the castle i have because the castle is curved so it all fits prefectly, i personally think that they look nicer to if your in it for the show.

I have nothing but bowfront tanks: 5g, 12g, 72g and never found them difficult to scape or distorted looking for picture taking.

Please don't think I'm against bow front tanks...like I said I think it's just a matter of personal preference
