Personally, for biggest impact, I throw a really big school or two of tetras in there... like cardinals or serpae or... uh, well, chose a type! Cardinals just have that stunning, eye catching red/blue color and I've seen a tank full of long finned serpae that was just one of the most beautiful things ever... and it was a bare LFS stock tank.

You could have a few big gouramis or something for centerpiece fish and a large school of cories for entertainment factor... then a pleco for the simple uniqueness of the fish. For some reason, those guys just draw in attention. Plecos are cool. *nods sagely*

Make it all densely planted with lots of rock work and driftwood... maybe a carpet effect in the foreground if you can manage it. See if you can get your hands on some of the more colorful plants, throw in reds or purples... 'Twould be a lovely tank.

~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~

clown loach=eye opener

A huge school of clowns, a huge school of bala sharks, and tetras or something.

That would b sweet.

Hard to say really without knowing your experience with fishkeeping. You also have to take into account your own likes and dislikes.

I am heading in the same direction as Openwater with the opinion here.

I am moving into a small apartment soon. My 4ft tank will take up most of one wall. I wanted the ohh ahh factor too. I went for a mbuna setup.
see here;

http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Malawi%20Cichlids/53680.html?200501272110

Good luck with your new setup. Make sure you post the pic of the tank so we can oooh and ahhhh at all the right times.

you want oohs and ahhs, get a bichir or 2. I get more questions and compliments on my 6 bichirs than anything else. for pics of mine, click the 'www' on my post, go to page 2 and click on "Polypterus and other bottom dwellers". my bichirs are in a tank that is difficult to photograph (I'm pretty sure it's the background which I might be changing soon), so the pics aren't the best but you can get an idea what they look like.

for cichlids, there are literally hundreds of choices and I'm just talking about CA/SA cichlids as they are my favorites. just a short list of species you could consider are Amphilophus lyonsi]http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/lyonsi.male.jpg[/link] (not to be confused with a trimac or flowerhorn. lyonsi can be hard to come by though , Amphilophus robertsoni (see my picture gallery, page 1), [link=Cryptoheros sp. 'cutteri']http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/cutteri.male.jpg[/link], [link=Cryptoheros sajica (tbar cichlid)]http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/sajica.pair.jpg[/link], [link=Honduran Red Point]http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/honrp.jpg[/link], [link=Herichthys carpintis (the picture is of an escondido which is an extra colorful race of this species)]http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/escondidomale2.jpg[/link], [link=Hypsophrys nicaraguense (Nicaraguan cichlid)]http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/nicarag.pr.jpg[/link], [link=Parachromis friedrichsthalli]http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/fred1.jpg[/link], [link=Parachromis loisellei]http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/lois3.jpg[/link], [link=Thorichthys aureum (blue flash)]http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/blueaureus.jpg[/link], [link=Thorichthys sp. 'Mixteco blue']http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/bluemixteco.jpg[/link], and [link=Paratheraps synspilus]http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/synsp.fem.jpg[/link]. Other possibilities are green or gold severums, oscars and [link=Hypselecara temporalis (chocolate cichlid). Now you could not do all of these together, but if any of these interest you I can help you come up with a list of ones that would be good together in your tank.

Another option for a great display tank would be a single pair of a larger, aggressive CA cichlid. I get a lot of compliments on my Red Terror tank. Again, see my gallery for Amphilophus festae (red terrors) to see pics of these. Other choices for a pair of cichlids would be Vieja maculicauda (black belt cichlid)]http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/lam.mac.jpg[/link], [link=Petenia splendida (Red Bay Snook)]http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/snook.male.jpg[/link], [link=Parachromis motaguense (this pic is the Red Tiger morph, but there's also a gold morph)]http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/motag.2.jpg[/link], [link=Parachromis managuense (jaguar cichlid)]http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/manag.jpg[/link], [link=Nandopsis tetracanthus (cuban cichlid--could be hard to come by)]http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/tetracan.jpg[/link], [link=Nandopsis grammodes (another that could be difficult to find)]http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/grammod.male.jpg[/link], [link=Amphilophus trimaculatus (trimac or 3-spot cichlid)]http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/images/trim2.jpg[/link], or the ever common but popular [link=Amphilophus citrinellus (midas) or red devil.

I wanted to add one more suggestion. You really want to get people's attention then try a Fahaka puffer (Tetraodon lineatus) . this puffer would likely have to be kept alone though, so if you don't want a single fish then this wouldn't be the way to go. but, a 16-18" puffer would definitely attract attention.

Hi,
Take a look at this site:

http://showcase.aquatic-gardeners.org/2004.cgi?&Scale=1&op=showpage&name=view-ag-xl

This is the contest entries for the Aquatic Gardners
Association, extra large tanks (100+gallons). While
you don't have to go to these "extremes" they will
give you some ideas for a pleasing blend of plants
and fish.
The data for each entry accompanies the picture and
included the plants and fish used, as well as the
substrate, lighting, and other information.

You might be pleasantly surprized.

Frank

I have 9 adults with 2 juvenile discus in my planted 125. In addition, I have 2 rams, 5 BN and 6 corydoras with a dozen neons. Some of the fish are Stendker discus from Joe Szelesi in Maryland (Enchanted Discus), others I have purchased from local and not-so-local breeders.

I don't recommend lfs discus... send me a message and I will give you some names if I know your area of the country. It's inexpensive to look...

This is a shot of my 125...

But you can keep posting ideas and please give quanity of the fish you would add. So far the bala/loach tank and the discus tank are my favorite. Im still looking for some good cichlid chooses give me the fishes name and quanity of fish

I'm really liking the discus tank idea after seeing the photos on that site.

It would look spectacular to have like 10-12 discus in there with large pieces of driftwood, a few giant Amazon swords, and sand on the bottom.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

Is there any bigger or more exotic freshwater fish than a discus. Toss 10 or 12 adult discus in theat tank with a driftwood centerpiece. Pick a dominant color or mix them up from white to powder blue or metallic blue or red with white faces.

The fish will confuse anyone who isn't in the hobby because they will think that they are salt water fish! See this link for samples: http://www.diskuszucht-stendker.de/pages/about_us.html

Mmmm, this topic is definitely a fish preference post!
