JQW Fish Addict Posts: 869 Kudos: 758 Registered: 09-Apr-2003 | Hey guys, I've got a 50x16x16 tank lying in the garage. Some of you might know from the other post, I stocked up all the equipments on my birthday (yesterday)....Shopping day Now....bleach the tank to remove anything that doesn't belong in the tank. So 1 part bleach in 19 part water. Yea? What should the initial concentration of bleach solution be? Was thinking about some Sodium Hypochloride (Chlorine bleach), how about it? Top up the tank, add bleach, add power head and let it run for a couple of days. Drain the tank completely and rinse and fill up with fresh water and add dechlorinator at 3 times the recommended dose. Give it a week and it should be fine, right? Tank going to be bare bottomed. Eheim 2213 will be installed after bleach treatment has completed. What else can I do? Cheers, Jim |

Just take a clean cloth and a bucket of bleach, and add one capful of pure chlorine bleach to about 10 quarts of water and take the cloth and slosh the bleach water around with the cloth and scrub the places that need it. Then dump the bleach water, rinse thoroughly with clean water and perhaps let it sit for an hour or a day if necessary with a double-dose of dechlorinator in the water, then let the tank dry completely, in the sun if possible (UV rays break down bleach). Letting the bleach sit isn't going to increase its effectiveness, and the bleach will disperse evenly throughout the water, so there is no need for a powerhead to move anything around. Don't make the process more difficult/time consuming than it needs to be. Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean... |

If you must get a practically worn out unit and use that. After you have cleaned the tank just take it outside and give it a very good hosing. After it is all finished what to you intend to do with the tank then.
