Hi all,

I was wondering if a fluval 204 would be sufficiant for a 50gal? I'm using a fluval 204 for my current 25gal and is this overfiltering?

I think it would be a bit on the light side. According to Hagen, Fluval 204s are only good up to 40 gallons. If you already have a 204 and don't want to upgrade to a 304 or a 404, you might want to consider adding a HOB filter like an Aquaclear.

Here are the comparisons

Fluval 204
For tanks up to 200 Lt
680 Lt per Hr.

Eheim 2213
Aqu size 250
440 Lt per Hr

All I can say being an Eheim owner "Professional 11" is Eheim Naturally

It is a far superior well made product.

Naturally it is going to cost more but you are paying for quality.

Gee,

Flow rate is a factor but the real answer is "it depends". In this case, the flow rate for the Fluval is 680 lph but the unit is recommended only for aquariums up to 200 liters. On the other hand, the Eheim has a flow rate of 440 lph, less than the Fluval. However, the Eheim is recommended for aquariums up to 250 liters! Seems that the Eheim can hold more media and therefore can support a larger tank.
