Congratulations you have the first correct step asking first rather that relying on the local pet shop who most are interested in sales only. Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info Look here for my Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tank Photos Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. Also, cruise through the article section on this site for more info. There are some great articles on getting started, cycling the tank without using fish (the ammonia method... pure, clear unscented ammonia only, and only a few drops a day) Get a good test kit (liquids are best) so you can monitor the progress of the cycle and keep a close eye on your water parameters. Once the nitrogen cycle is complete, you can add fish as the water is safe and stable. For adding tap water, get a basic "water conditioner" or "de-chlorinator", sold at any store that sells fish. If you're in the USA, look for a brand called API (Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Inc). They make good stuff. As for filtration and tank size, 20g is great to start with, that's what I did for my first tank just a short yr ago. I bought an Aqua Clear filter, hangs on the back of the tank, very simple easy to use and assemble. Anyhow, keep checking in, this site will save you lots of heartache and nonsense, IF you take the advice of the long time people here. I have learned a TON of stuff and saved fishies lives!! Good luck and welcome to FP! |

I bought a bottle of it and I use it on the new water I put in with my water changes. I paid more than I wanted to for my syphon (python 25') but it seems well worth it from the reviews and after using it once. You get what you pay for must've been a quote from an aquarist. Same goes for the test kit. I initially used strips (6 in 1) but they are worthless. I ended up buying an API Freshwater Master Test Kit. Now I know what my problems are.
