Hi,
A couple of things to keep in mind as you place your
filters around the tank. All fish need to be able to
escape the currents for resting periods.
Hard-scape such as rocks or driftwood or other
ornaments can provide this as the fish will rest in
the lee side of the objects out of the currents.

Are your fish "river fish" in which the currents normally
run in one direction. If that is the case then placing the
filters a one end or on the far right on the back and on
the right side would send the currents to the left.

Set the filters so that there are no "dead spots" where
the water can stagnate or cool where the circulating
warm water from the heater cannot reach them.

Some fish absolutely love currents and frolic in them
darn near non stop, others like angel fish, discus, and
the Siamese Fighting Fish, can't stand currents and
wear themselves out fighting them.

So, know your fish, their preferences, and place the filter
returns accordingly.

Frank

Am I correct in saying the aquaclear 30 power heads are a HOB and basically move the water in the top and middle water levels.
Depending on the depth of your tank the HOB filters do not move the water very much at the lower levels.

As Frank mentioned it will depend on the size of the tank, how it is Aquascaped, and certainly your main concern must be the fish.

It would help more if you could post a photo of the tank and what fish you have or intend to have in the tank.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Thank you for your helpful replies.
Currently the tank is in a fishless cycle. My tank shop sold me some guppies to put in it to help the amonia and bacteria but I havent purchased any other fish yet. My wife wants pretty fish but thats all I know. I told her I wanted to make sure the tank was right before I started dumping money into fish. She has picked out plenty of aquascape for the fish to hide. The aquaclear 30 is suppose to multifunctional there are lots of different uses and it comes with suction cup attachment to place at the bottom of the tank.I just use it for the current not filtering. Someone told me I should possition them on the bottom on the same side. does this sound correct? Or would it be wise to set the filters side by side and the power heads toward mid tank on opposite sides. The aquaclear 30 supposedly moves 175 gph.

I didn't see where the size of the tank was said. It sounds like either the tank is huge and the guppiees aren't gonna do anything for a cycle in it. Or the tank is not that big are that is way too much water movement.

Gourami has it right, tank size is important here.
If you've got all that on even a 55 I'd say you're overdoing it let alone anything smaller.
Your tank doesn't need to look like a washing machine!

You mentioned that the tank was cycling, here is a link you should read and fully understand.

Personally I'm not at all happy That your LFS gave you fish to cycle with. Hopefully the fish will pull through, and will not have introduced any diseases into the tank.

If you've got any questions on the cycling link I posted feel free to start another thread, we'll be more than happy to help.
