Hi everyone

Just about to close down a tank of mine because of hair algie and snail problems

How and what is best used to clean glass and equipment?

A part bleach solution, a soft scourer pad (+ elbow grease - LOL), rinse well or would totally drying out the tank/ equipment kill spores, snails and their eggs????

Thanks in advance

Dave

Dave,

My recommendation is scouring the tank with a mild bleach solution (1 cup bleach to 19 cups of water). Be sure to clean the aquarium in open air. Use a non-scratch abrasive pad and a toothbrush to work the solution into the seams inside the aquarium to eliminate algae spores. Hopefully your efforts will dislodge or compromise any snail eggs. They have a nasty ability to survive.

Be sure to thoroughly flush the aquarium with fresh water after cleaning. You should not have any chlorine (bleach) smell after flushing with fresh water.

I believe, although im not 100% but members that are more experienced will correct me.

You could get a clown loach to clear the snails and a bristlenose cat/pleco will clean up any algae in no time!

Could save you the process of re-cycling the tank again

If the tank/equipment was left to dry out completely, after cleaning, say for two days - would this kill the snail eggs?

(Have two clowns, two yoyo, 3 brisstlenoses and a s.a.e., tried all the usual water chemistry/changes but still can not shift the stuff and snails - this is my last option)

I have heard of snail eggs surviving in dry substrate for over 12months.

If you are going for a total clean it will every thing in the tank. If possible I would go for a Clown loach and find out what is causing the algae problem.
