I have a new 55gal tank that I am cycling with some guppies. What is the optimum number of fish to cycle with? I realize that less fish will make the process slower but is there an ideal number? I have six guppies and a few neons that I was planning on using. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I wouldn't use neons. I'd try 6-10 guppies. Unless you want them to be the main part of the tank though I would get all males or all females. Other wise your tank will be over run by guppy fry. Guppies are a good choice though for cycling because they are very hardy.

well, the general rule of thumb i've always lived by is to start slow and build slowly. i agree with not using neons, but other tetras are hardy enough to cycle with. cardinals would be a better choice if you like that style of coloring that neons have.

I would contend that one should cycle there take with exactly 0 (zero) fish. Do fishless cycling! It's much easier!

I agree with Moondog start slowly. Certainly do not use the neons. I would prefer to use at least 6+ Zebra Danios they ar as tough as they make them. Final decision go with the Cardinals as they are far tougher than the plain old neons.
As far as correct number to use it would depend totally on how the tank is set up, filtration, live plants, and substrate used. I dont think there is even a general rule.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Hi,
Unless the fish you are going to cycle the tank with are
also ones you actually want to KEEP in the tank when the
cycling is complete and are REALLY HARDY, I would do the
fishless cycling...
Read the information in this link and seriously consider
it:
