One of my red clawed crabs has lost a claw. I saw the claw on the bottom of the tank and thought it may just have shed it's shell, but then i found him in his usual resting place with one entire claw missing. Any advice would be great! do they grow back? if not can he function properly without it?

They do grow back, and it should be able to function with just one claw as long as he's not competing too much for food. Give him some high-calcium snacks and maybe add a few drops of marine iodine to the water. The iodine is supposed to reduce stress during molting and speed injuries. Kent makes a good supplement, but only use 1/4 to 1/2 the dose recomended for reef tanks.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

When you say "one of my red claw crabs", does that mean you have more than one in the tank?

I'm unfamiliar with the species, but I suspect that they don't routinely shed limbs. Maybe keep a close eye on the relationship between all shelled occupants

I would have asked the same question as Callatya re more than one??

If so here lies the problem if the tank is not large enough or they are both aggressive there will always be problems. I strongly suggest you ask at where you bought it/them from.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

I did ask, when i bought them and i did research them as well. For the size of my tank every source of information said if would be fine. I have three of these crabs in a 180litre (45-ish gallon) and very very rarely see them anywhere near each other. each one has it own terratory which it won't leave.

illustrae - is it safe to dose my community tank with iodine? would it affect any of my other fish?

what is your stock list? Do they have a place where they can crawl out of the water? Just keep a close eye on him and he should be fine, if things get bad quarintine him for awhile
