i was just curious if all the aquarists out there look at having a bunch of mystery snails is:

A) Bonus: the snails obviously get rid of algae, and they provide food for fish like loaches(im pretty sure im right on that)

B) Pest: too many of them make the tank look unsightly and unappealing

Personally it depends on what type of snail it is.

If the mystery snail is a Malaysian Trumpet Snail then i would love to have a huge population running in my tank. These little guys are substrate burrowers, so they hide in the substrate during the day, and come out at night. They will not eat live plants.

If it is a pond snail, then i would warn against those, and get a loach to kill them off, as those do eat live plants IME, and are in sight during the daylight.

If it is a ramshorn snail, i would love these as they are usually colorful, and have a great spiraling pattern that makes for a great little living ornament.

It all depends on the type of snail to see if i would want them in the tank. I currently have the Malaysian Trumpets in my tank, and have a good experience with them.

So, i would chose B)

I choose A.

I have 3 mystery snails in my cichlid tank, and I can barely find them. I usually need to look around or under rocks etc - so they are not unsightly.

Actually, I like the look of my snails - they have a cherry brown shell with black hash mark stripping - very unique looking.

And of course, they devour algae.

I have three gold mysteries.... they are great looking in my tank, nad seem to help with some algae control on the gravel, druiftwood and rocks. However, they havent touched the algae on my plants. It will be time to call in the big dogs... a gold CAE!

i agree with that guy that posted up above a little, if you want snails malaysian trumpet snails are probably the way to go. mysterys produce a good amount more waste then trumpets, and too much doo doo is never good, neither will probably over populate, just dont overfeed trupets or they will

i like feesh

Snails are a pest for me, I dont like the way they look. And for some reason I see snails and I think bad water quality. dont know why.

On the plus side for snails, my Rainbows and Clown Loaches love them.
