given there is nothing else in the tank, 6-8 male guppies.

i would stay away from the larger of the big 4, swords and mollies.

Four platies - you would be better off if you had all males. You could (maybe)do one male and three females, but then there would be the question of what to do with the fry. They can easily over populate a ten gallon. Platies do, however; tend to eat their own fry, if there are no hiding places for them.
The other species will get too large for your tank.

Guppies would be easy I personally would start of with one male and two females. Also consider some type of plants for the fry to hide as in a small area they will become easy food for the others. If you start of with more you will very easly become over populated very quickly and this will cause many more problems polution etc.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

yes, swords are one of the larger big 4,

when i was in mexico, i did see kinda wild swordtail females at a huge size of 5-6 inches, but still domesticated swordtails shouldn't be in a 10 gallon.
