Most of you probably already know about my larger platy harrassing my smaller one. Anyway, this afternoon, the smaller died, assumably because of the harrassment. Now, i was going to get a pair of female platies in there anyway, however i am worried they will be met with a similar fate. The larger has a new home (we were origionally giving him away). Do you think i should put the females in and wait a week to see if he calms down, or get rid of him now because he's bad news???

Thanks in advance.

He won't harrass the females as bad as he did the (comepetition) male, but, if you get him some girls, you will soon have the same problem I'm having....to many fish not enough water. You will have platies coming out of your ears.

Either give this guy to your friend or keep him in there alone....he'll be okay as the lone platy, they're not schooling fish that I'm aware of. I had a lone male platy all by himself for the longest time in my 29. The other fish kept getting killed by the tank cycle, ick, and various other problems....he's the only fish that held up....I've had hime the longest out of any of my fish, bless his heart.

I am going to give him away, as i think it is safest for me not to keep him. (the home is organised)

Now, i still like platies, but male male pairs don't work. How about a female female pair??? Or would they savage each other too?

Uuurg. Maybe i should switch to guppies...

If i had 3 platies (1 m/2 f) Would they eat nearly all the fry?

OK, i love livebearers.

Thanks.

(sorry, i should explain, i want more than 1 platy)

If you don't particularly want a population explosion in your tank female/female would work nicely, I don't think there would be agression issues there, I've never seen my females go after each other....be aware, though, that female platies can be pregnant from the fish store.

As for platies eating the fry...it can happen, but rarely if you have plenty of hiding spots for the babies. I just gave away 13 baby platies to a friend and I still have 2 or 3 more in my tank and none of them were eaten by any of the fish, including the opaline gourami, who could have eaten them pretty easily when they were first born. My tank has lots of plants, though, and the babies hid in them until they got a little size on them.

How many females were with those two males? That could be the reason he became very aggressive towards the smaller male.

To start off with a 3-1 ratio would keep any male happy.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

There were origionally no females in there. Anyway, the larger platy has just started randomly attacking my tiny corys, so i am giving him away, and probably not doing platies again for a whil, but my luck goes like this
1) i was told he was a boy, but he was actually a girl, and my other origional platy harrassed her to death.
2) was harrassed to death by my larger platy.
3) is evil - getting him rehomed.

So, thanks for comments, but i think it's best for him and the rest of my fish for him to move to the bigger tank.

BlackNeonFerret,

I started a tank with 2 female platies and they still get along very well, 6 months later.

But just because you don't add any males may not be enough to protect you from over-population. I have by now about 10 platies in that tank and I am fishing multiple fry out of my filter almost weekly.

As you probably know, female platies can store sperm for up to 6 months and fertilize their eggs during that entire period, they don't need a male in that time in order to have babies.

Have fun,

Ingo

I worried about this same issue too. I have 2 boys & 2 girls in my tank. One or other of the girls is always pregnant, but so far all the fry have been eaten. My LFS has told me he will take any fry that survive, so no problems there either. I've only seen 2 of the fry, and only the once - but maybe I've just been lucky.

Your tank is 15G & lightly planted - right? So you might be lucky like me. Maybe that size tank lightly planted = less hiding spaces = less chance of fry surviving. Just my thoughts, as I don't have too much experience either.

Good luck with yours

Cheers
