B'bee gobi & Lf danio | |
Brengun Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 187 Votes: 110 Registered: 22-Jun-2007 | I have gotten a few new fish in the past few weeks. Five bumblebee gobis and three longfin zebra danios. Both are hard to photograph. The gobis because they are so small and the danios because they swim so fast. |

The gobis and halfbeaks don't really do much toward cleaning the bottom of the tank. Any ideas on what would be a suitable bottom cleaner? My corys would loathe salt and probably the bn's too. I have a spiney eel but eventually I think the gobis would become the food. How much salt can Pornacea Bridgetti apple snails take? |

Keep in mind that bottom feeders don't necessarily keep the bottom clean. If they did my tank would be sparkling because almost all of my fish are bottom feeders, lol. Nice pics. That gobies look like they need to fatten up, though. -------------------------------------------- The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. |

Brengun Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 187 Votes: 110 Registered: 22-Jun-2007 | Thanks for telling me they need fattening as I have no idea what the gobis are supposed to look like. They are eating frozen bloodworms atm so at least I know they are eating. Been reading up on brackish water tanks and found I need marine salt not aquarium salt. I didn't know there is a difference. I also read that brackish and salt tend to stay a lot cleaner in water quality anyway due to the salt content so a vac should be ok once a week for cleaning. Algae growth is also inhibited from the salt so maybe I won't really need a bottom feeder? |

Yes, marine salt is necessary. Get a hydrometer, or if you don't mind blowing another $30+ USD you can go for a refractometer. The extra price is totally worth it, IMO. My refractometer is definitely one of my fave pieces of equipment, it's so much better testing salinity than any of the other water parameters I test, lol. I don't think brackish is any better than freshwater. The salt doesn't do anything for how much fish make waste. A vac once a week would be good on a freshwater tank too if you're not too stocked. You can definitely still get algae in brackish and saltwater. I don't know if horseface loaches eat algae, though. -------------------------------------------- The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. |
