Betta coccina (more, now out of the bag) | |

Bought one that will probably be the centerpiece in my Asian biotope tank. Excuse the glare and cloudiness in the pics as we're still acclimating. Also please excuse the imperfect tail since these wonderful fish were kept with tiger barbs at the store Hopefully will gets some pictures out of the bag soon [/font][/font] Last edited by Theresa_M at 03-Oct-2004 13:40 Last edited by Theresa_M at 04-Oct-2004 09:52[/font] ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

Congrats on the find! -------------------------------------------- The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. |

It was actually an impulse buy although I bought it knowing I had a spare 5g available in case compatability ended up being a problem. So far it (I still have to research sexing them) seem shy but that could just be a result of being in a new home. Hasn't bothered any of the other fish, and vice versa. bensaf Fish Master Posts: 1978 Kudos: 1315 Registered: 08-Apr-2004 | Theresa, Nice fish Do you know where they come from originally ? The reason I ask is if you remember I told you about the LFS where I found the croaking gourami (got another one btw, female, being used as a feeder for some huge eel thing, got her out just in time) well they have some wild bettas for sale. Beauts, short finned males similar in size and shape to yours, red body but an irridescent blue/green sheen to the top half of the body. But the guy told me he got them locally (Indonesia). Love to know what they are but no idea what bettas are found wild in Indonesia. Also I've heard with the wild types it's possible to keep more then one male together. Any truth to that rumour. If I do pick one up I'll post some pics for id. So far the croakers are camera shy. Remember that age and treachery will always triumph over youth and ability. |

Seems like very once in a while something other than splendens show up in the stores. bensaf...[link=Here]http://fish.mongabay.com/data/Indonesia.htm" style="COLOR: #FFFF99[/link] is a good list of freshwater fish from Indonesia...there are actually quite a few Bettas listed. [link=This site]http://www.ibc-smp.org/species/" style="COLOR: #FFFF99[/link] has Betta species listed alphabetically. Good info on size, water temps, countries of origin, etc. I also frequently reference Bettas and Gouramis by David Alderton. It was a long time before I got decent pictures of the sparklers. And with this betta I'm having a hard enough time finding him/her in the tank, never mind a good picture ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

Finally found him, he seems to be exploring the tank, staying in one area for a while and then moving on. He's quite interested in his reflection but has shown no interest in the other fish. Right now he's still a challenge to photograph I know the glass needs cleaning but I liked this one because it shows his horizontal stripes: [/font][/font] ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

I got this girl, who we named Jasmine, in the middle of August and noticed something wasn't the same as my other 2 girls. I have had Betta Splendid girls before and this one just seemed different. Maybe everyone could help me out in trying to figure out if I lucked out as well and found a Betta Coccine!!!!:rosses fingers::: The reason i am thinking this is because of the shape of her body, and the fin that runs along the bottom of her body is a little bit differently shaped. What do you guys/girls think? Is it one? Jessnick42503 attached this image: Last edited by Jessnick42503 at 04-Oct-2004 09:59[/font] |

I'm definitely not a Betta expert, but from what I've learned so far most Bettas other than splendens tend to be browns, reds, greens, golds. [link=This site]http://www.ibc-smp.org/species/index.html" style="COLOR: #FFFF99[/link] has information and pictures on many Betta species. You might want to post this picture and question in [link=Labyrinth Lounge]http://www.fishprofiles.com/interactive/forums/forum.asp?id=8" style="COLOR: #FFFF99[/link] or [link=Advanced Betta Care]http://www.fishprofiles.com/interactive/forums/forum.asp?id=39" style="COLOR: #FFFF99[/link]. I'm currently trying to breed coccina- i tracked a pair down at a lfs and have recently ordered some more in as it is difficult to form pairs and my two have shown no interest in each other. They're in a 18 inch tank atm with very strict water quality. Water currently at ph 6.7 and is changed three times weekly. The male loves to make huge nests but stays clear of the female. Anyone else has these before?? Ben |
