The only digital camera in the house, a Minolta Dimage S414, is only able to focus well on objects at least six inches away. My mom told me that the camera was pretty cheap, around $40. Since I want to be able to take some good close-ups of my fish, do I need a new camera? Any close-up I attempt results in a fuzzy fish.

first make sure you are in macro mode (the flower mode). if you are, then you probably do need a better camera that can handle closeups. also look at the zoom you have. you want the largest number on "optical" zoom you can get, not digital zoom or total zoom.

I adjusted the photo with Adobe Elements, just to make it a bit clearer. Then I noticed several things
1 did you take the photo from the L/H side?
2 the cory at the rear seems in better focus.
3 note the pebbles front and to the left are in perfect focus.
The camera could be too slow, settings not set correctly or a combination of many other factors

It is also a very small resolution. I have enclosed a WWW Camera site go there locate your cameras forum and ask about taking photos there.

A new camera with a good macro mode (look @canon and nikon) can be bought for under $200....I'd go for a new one but then again that's just me.

Babel is not a fan of Kodak () but I happen to love my new Kodak cx7530. though it was $300. I am getting really good closeups now that I have figured out the macro settings.

Its "fuzzy" because the shutter size must have been quite large. Notice how the gravel looks fine but the cories are "fuzzy". Set the shutterspeed (tells the camera how fast to take the pic) smaller (~1/30) but at that level, you'll need a ton of light because it takes the picture very fast which limits "exposure time". As a result, not much light is recieve by the camera and the shot is dim.

Okay, I'll try your suggestions and see if I can come out with some good pics. Thanks for your help, everyone!
