I did locate this one for you with some info. Not a savage beast of mythical proportions. It is in fact the Gippsland Water Dragon Physignathus lesueurii howittii, a spectacular subspecies of the Eastern Water Dragon. Our Gippsland dragon is confined to eastern Victoria and far south-eastern NSW, whilst the nominate species extends right up from central NSW to Cape York Peninsula in Queensland. The male is a very aggressive animal, occasionally growing to 80cm, most of which is tail. During the breeding season he reaches his most spectacular colour, grey to green above with a series of blackish transverse bars extending onto the tail. A rich green flush covers the chest while the throat is strikingly blotched with orange, red, blue, green and yellow. To finish this off a bold crest extends from the top of the neck along to the tail. A fine beast! The female is drab in comparison. Water dragons lay eggs, usually in moist soil within rotting vegetation or logs in November and December. Young hatch in January and February, and judging by the number seen in the lower Rainforest Gully, a healthy natural population thrives in the Gardens. This semi-aquatic, arboreal lizard will often perch on tree branches overhanging water in creeks or rivers, from which it will flop into the water if disturbed. Enjoy observing the dragons, they are fun to watch once you have developed the knack of finding them in the Gully. Remember they are part of our environment and can provide us with stimulation and entertainment. They are harmless creatures and deserve to be protected, studied and most importantly, enjoyed. But other members might find it useful. I just wanted to see if you had any shots of the males from the aquarium so others could see the sexual dimorphism in this species. |
