My betta pair | |
Brengun Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 187 Votes: 110 Registered: 22-Jun-2007 | Well since my female betta has zero stripes either horizonal or vertical it is a little hard to tell when she's in the mood. Tonight when I released her from the brood net she looked to be but when the male wasn't quite sure what to do (his first time ) she whirled around and bit bits off of him. Never mind bubble 0 7, better luck next time. |

Brengun Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 187 Votes: 110 Registered: 22-Jun-2007 | Male should have a bubble nest. Female should have a nice fat belly full of eggs and vertical bars. I don't think you can have them together in the same tank unless there is a divider of some sort. I do have a clear cone which I can keep the female in within the tank but the last female got all stressed when the male rushed at the cone, so now I have a brooder net with the female in. When she looks in the mood, I let her out of the net, and give it a good clean while I have it out. If you are successful and have fry they will only eat live food initially. |

Callatya Moderator The girl's got crabs! Posts: 9662 Kudos: 5261 Registered: 16-Sep-2001 | You are trying to breed two fellas there, that girl is 100% plakat male, and a very nice one at that! He's in really good nick The ovipositor is deceptive, unfortunately they are showing up very regularly in males now. Everything else about him though just says male, with the extended beard and long ventrals and especially the way he's displaying at a right angle to the other male. When they are young it is getting trickier and trickier to tell. Fin shapes and body types are changing so quickly that the only sure fire way is to take a torch and look for eggs. Welcome to the "boys" club Been there, done that! |

Brengun Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 187 Votes: 110 Registered: 22-Jun-2007 | That is very enlightening. Guess what? I have them both in a 3ft planted tank and the only other inhabitants are 10 plecos. Yes, they are both together and neither of them are willing to start any displaying or fighting. They both just enjoy cruising the tank inspecting the plants and snails. I will keep a closer eye on them now, knowing they are both males. |

zachf92 Big Fish Posts: 343 Kudos: 255 Votes: 233 Registered: 31-Dec-2005 | Well congrats on having a plakat, and a beautiful on at that Yours is really clean-cut and doesn't have and stray spots or anything of the sort. It almost looks like the ones you see on aquabid for $20 Male betta aggression is often times overrated and not all males are the bloodthirsty killers they are made out to be when kept in large aquariums. Obviously, you're better off not taking the chance of putting two males together, but its a "hit or miss" situation, most times being "miss". I think you have everything well under control though. |
