My guppy babies | |
kitten Fish Guru Meow? Posts: 2266 Kudos: 2194 Votes: 19 Registered: 18-Nov-2003 | I received three young (supposedly female) guppies from my sister's boyfriend a few months ago. One turned out to be a male and now I have dozens of guppies all over. As they mature and are easily sexed, the males go to my sister. Of course, now I'm a bit peeved, because they're turning out to be simply gorgeous. It's amusing, because though the parents are sibs (yellow/black leopard patterned), the male babies are quite stunningly different. Oh, their main colors are yellow and black, but well... the father has spots along his entire body; his offspring have a shiny black body that is really quite striking, as they're overlaid with a blue-green irridescence. It's hard to get pictures of them because they're so active, but I managed to get some somewhat decent shots this morning. I still can't get a good picture of the parents, but here are two of the male babies: We just moved another male into her tank whose colors are just coming into being. He was overlooked as a male in my tank, because of the large black splotch on his sides that looks oddly like a misplaced gravid spot. Well, and the fact that finding a male in my tank is like playing Where's Waldo. Here's a sampling of the fish in her tank, for size comparison. There's the two black mollies, one of the blue danios hiding out behind the smaller molly and one of the guppy babies. The bigger of the mollies was added last and is constantly harassed because the other mollies seem convinced that he's a she. My next project is to get decent pictures of the parents and the youngest of the males, who is going to be quite stunning, too, if his early coloring is any promise. Edit: The froggy! I forgot the froggy! Bad me... She's got two of them and this one was just in the perfect place for me to photograph it this morning. I think the expected size is 2-3". Yes, that's an ADF, isn't he cute? There's two of them, and it's not terribly usual for them to be wide out in the open like that one was, so I grabbed the pic. Her tank theme was black and white fish, so the frogs fit in well. The guppiese throw in a nice splash of color. ~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~ |
