I got two new fish today. They are red scats I think. Cute little guys only the size of a large coin atm. Yeah, I know they grow bigger. I have adjusted the ph and salinity in the quaranteen hospital tank to suit.

After a couple of hours of settling in, the color change was dramatic.

Woah, I was not aware they could change their color that much!

For some reason I'm thinking Scatophagus tetracanthus, but I could be wrong. I've never seen them with a V-like stripes, just full stripes.

Very nice fish. It's too bad scats are largely incompatible with the other 95% of aquarium fish.

Lovely colouration's on those fish they must have settled in very quickly, what every you are doing it must be correct. When you first saw them did they have those stripes.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Nice little fish Bren You do realise that they won't keep those markings or colour as they get older?

You're going to need more of them - they are a definite schooling fish... so probably another tank in your future

I hope you are not too attached to any plants that are in their tank because its likely that they will rip them to shreds. I used to have a school of scats that absolutely loved fresh greens. Fresh lettuce leaves were a particular favorite in our tank.

I'm pretty sure that scats carry a toxin of some sort which results in a very painful wound if you happen to get spiked by one of their spines while handling them so watch out for that. (I haven't been able to find any details after a very quick net search but I recall a colleague accidentally stepping on one at a prawn farm where I worked for a while - he was either a big cry baby or it truly hurt like heck!)

Yes, the dorsal has poisonous spines. I have often gotten spiked when catching ocean fish with a rod.
I picked them out of the drip acclimatisation bucket by hand, and fortunately they did not stick me.

They were not going to last too long in the lfs in fresh water with a whiptail and clown loaches for company.
I have put them in my nano tank with 1/2 strength brackish for starters.
Lettuce is a good tip for food, thanks.

At the moment they are "scaredy scats" and seldom stray out from under the filter.

Apparently I was wrong on my ID, I didn't know that Scatophagus argus had an alternate form. Looks good anyway.
