Lindy,

Nice tank ! And nice layout. But I would move the Red Temple a bit, just a bit further back. The plants look really healthy good job. With the plants looking that good and green I'd actually go for a black background. That may sound like it would make the tank darker but in fact it would really show off both those bright greens and the fish colors and would probably make the tank look brighter.

Nice work

I mixed vermiculate with top soil and made it about an inch think. I then covered it in 1 inch of sand and then placed some gravel on top. If you look closely you can see 2 layers of gravel. You can see the bottom layer is a more red/earthy colour. I got this from the lfs and he claimed was iron rich. That was the most expensive part of the substrate. The rest was less than $7! Vermiculate came from a hydroponics store, the top soil from a garden centre.

About half way down under Gravel/substrate describes what I did with just a tiny varience. The rest of the article is quite interesting too.

I wouldn't mind hearing more about how you set up your substrate

Oh hey Sin! I'm glad you found my pics, I forgot to tell you about them when I saw you in chat... you know me :%)

Chizunk, there was a lot of planning that went on before I stuck the plants into position, and I think that is the key to having a successful planted tank. That and a good substrate and lighting which I think I have and managed to do on a tight budget. You dont have to buy everything from a lfs...

Thanks again for the nice comments.

Gomer, is it sort of floating/trying to escape my attempt to tie it to the wood!

*gives gomer a paint scraper*

Are my eyes tricking me, or is there an Anubias plant sort of floating about your driftwood?

I hate the blue. Just my opinion though. Black would be much better.

He is there in a lovely vision of blurriness!
My bad pics are a combination of my lack of ability to hold steady and a bad camera.
I'm glad ya like it though.

Red temple has been moved into the back corner near the val and water fern.

Changing the background is going to be a tough one unfortunately. Hubby painted the background on. If I remember correctly the convo I had with him went along the lines of

"Always changing your mind, typical woman! Whats wrong with blue? Your other tank had blue... *Lindy stops listening* blah blah blah..."

I'll get my paint scraper out.

Thanks again for the comments and suggestions.

I agree with moving the red temple back...I have mine teamed up with my wisteria....looks good poking out between the green...maybe just try the back corner since they do grow tall...or keep it trimmed low in the front :%)

The fishies seem to be happy, the cherry barbs have only been in the tank for a week and are already getting frisky. I'm not good at taking pics so excuse the blurries on some of these pics.

Hi mango, Yes that is a corkscrew val in a bunch. Have I broken a plant rule keeping them in a bunch? They havent been in the tank long so I could seperate them if they should be. (i'm still learning the plant thing!)

Hi Lindy

Nice Tank! Looks really cool!

Btw, may i ask...what is the plant in the second photo? Are they corkscrew val? Also is that a single plant or along bunched together? It looks really awesome.

Regards
Mango
