I anticipate Keith but the little blighters go the other way to how I anticipated , the only way I've ever got a half decent shot of these guys is when I've aimed at another fish and one of them has come into view at the right time :%)
But I will try and see if I can do better

Beautiful gouramis too btw Sin

I have same thing happening with my rams still to young to really sex but they seem to be chasing eachother rather then being together.

ya they act very strange. for a while shes allowed to stay close and they swim side by side or one leads. then later in the day i see him chaseing her away completly and constently.

lately its been more chaseing then pairing...she was new in the tank when i got that pic. they were best friends when i first put her in. now its touch and go.

Not sure about the odds. Might want to see if you can get a few more females to see which the male will pair with. Im also not really sure how "rare" females are. I had 3 rams and 1-2, male - female ratio and they seemed to get along fine, but one female always hids in the corner. And yes bolivians tend to be very picky. Sometimes it only takes 2 females and others the male wont spawn with any. Judging by that picture your rams dont seem to be fighting much. That could be good for you or bad for you. Either, they like each other and feel that they can live together fine, or they are already paired *probably not* If the male starts to chase and nip the female, that's normal. I think it is part of there mating ritual thingy. The male cichlid like sorta "tests" the female to see if she is a suitable mate.

Good luck Rams are fun fish.

HTH

[edit] By the way. The extensions on the males fins may become very long and are absolutely amazing when he matures and is full grown. Just something to look foreward to

so going by these rules by all rights i got a male and a female. are females rare cuz i picked this one out of a tank of 15+ fish and it was the ONLY one i thought could be a female by the same traits.

Edit: BTW, what are the odds are the 2 pairing up if they are the only rams in the tank lol. ive heard bolivians can be picky about mates and be in a tank with 5 females and never spawn with any of them.

Well, you DO sex them by the fins. But it isn't by looking at the first few spikes like it is with blue rams.

I circled in red, the things you can look for in males, and in blue the things you look for in females.

The fins are more pointed and will grow extensions where i have circled in red for the male. The female, however, will keep rounded fins and will stay smaller than the male.

i think i foudn him a girlfriend. can a ram lover help me out. the one on the right is the 1st and the one on the left is new.

notice the rounded dorsal end. i see no difference in spikes at all and i looked at a tank with 15 of them in there.

Those photos are 100% better. I had a little play with them, and they also came up very grainy as well. Was it a camera setting or a photoshop problem.

Loverly colours and a good chance to get a real close up.

I only have two rams in my in my tank and find them the easest to photograph all you have to do is be well prepared and anticipate their next move which is usually not far away.
