If they're only 6 or 7 cm, then I wouldn't worry about colouring up for a little while yet. Takes time for Discus to show their full adult majesty. Incidentally, do you use peat in any of your filter systems? Only quite a few Discus keepers do, or if they can't do that, they use a product such as Tetra's Blackwater Extract to add humic acids to the water. Do it slowly, mind Since Discus naturally live in waters that contain at least some humic acid content, this could very well 'jump start' your Discus if applied with due care and attention. However, looking at the setup, I'd say 'due care and attention' goes without saying - that's a well cared for aquarium! |

Mine were out and about about 2 weeks after I got them, happy and active and no longer shy. Mind you they were also a whole lot bigger, like small saucer size. Could make a difference. I do 35% water changes on my 75g (26g) tank every 12 days, with no problems with the discus at all. They enjoy their bloodworms once a week, and get tubifex twice a week, and then the rest of the time their diet varies between Big Als staple flake, HBH 8 Veggie Flake, Wardley Tropical slow sinking crumbles, and the occasional peice of chicken suspended on a string in the tank. They love their chicken! Discus are such great fish. I hope to one day have a bigger house, and get a 150g setup that will be just for discus. That is my dream tank. A rainbow of discus in a perfect biotope, with some nice small tetras and corys to go with it. Robby your tank looks fantastic! I too would not add any plants at this point, except as Dafishman said, maybe a nice big amazon sword, that would look great. GIve your plants time to grow and fill in, then see what you want to add or change. Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |

They must attract really loving and patient owners. Well, in order for them to thrive. Would love to see pix of your crew also. That is a lotta water to lug. Please tell me you are not doing it by bucket! ~~~ My fish blow kisses at me all day long ~~~ |

stuquarium Enthusiast Posts: 262 Kudos: 275 Votes: 0 Registered: 28-Oct-2004 | nice fish and tank mate, yes your discus will color with age and the right diet, plenty of frozen bloodworms i change my water every 3 days, thats 60L for the 55g tank every change, i often do it when the lights are out so it minimizes stress for them, after a few months they'll really come out, mine have, and now, i can hand feed most of mine, which is awesome! |

So_Very_Sneaky Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3238 Kudos: 2272 Votes: 201 Registered: 10-Mar-2004 | Robby, when the discus are just settling in, you may want to cut back on the water changes. I tried doing that with mine, every 3 days water changes recommended. I found the fish were simply too stressed out with that much activity. Now they are thriving along with my other fish with water change every 12 days. Beautiful fish. Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |

Rob1619 Fish Addict Posts: 763 Kudos: 619 Votes: 626 Registered: 01-Sep-2004 | I know the color of the Discus is not that good but they are getting better everyday and they also started to eat, that made me happy because they didn't touch any food for some days. Iam doing my best to get these Discus back to their best colors so i will do every 2nd-3rd day waterchanges. These Discus was grey/black color few days ago,but now they look better...isn't it.. Good stuff.. And no worries, plants will not affect your ph.. What plants, really your choice, you have a nice mixture in there... Moving toward SA biotope if making alot of changes.. If not wanting alot of changes, a large amazon swordplant would be MINT. That'd be about the only thing I'd add, your aquascape is very nice as it is. The Amazon Nut... |

Iam getting a fake root that i will putt in the right corner of my tank to hide the intake/powerhead. Front wiew of my 75g tank Robby Last edited by Robby1619 at 29-Nov-2005 08:52[/font] |

DaMossMan Fish Guru Piranha Bait Posts: 2511 Kudos: 2117 Votes: 359 Registered: 16-Nov-2003 | I'd wait a bit as you said so your new fish can settle in... I'd actually not think of adding more rocks, but adding more driftwood, and plants Any 'discus tope' would not have rocks like yours in it, but it still looks nice and it's your tank The Amazon Nut... |

Rob1619 Fish Addict Posts: 763 Kudos: 619 Votes: 626 Registered: 01-Sep-2004 | Thanks, Correct me if wrong, but those discus i have are Cobalt blue and Royal blue! Frozen shrimps is difficult to find here. I havent tried frozen blood worms yet,i will try that. I did try something else and i got surprised that the discus ate it,it was this"King British fish treats tablet food" i cut it in 3 pieces and putt a small piece in to see what happend. The Discus came out from the hidding place and started to eat,at last they are eating. I tried some dried brine shrimps but they don't want it. I will do 25%-30% water change to day,i did one 25%-30%yesterday. I really hope the colors will be better soon,do you know how long time it will take? Should i leave the tank as it is or could i have some more rocks in it? I don't want to do to much work with the tank since the discus gets stressed. Robby |

This might help to improve their colouring. Very good photos.
