I had a redtail shark one time that got stuck in a piece of drift wood. I didnt see him for a couple weeks, and when i was doing a water change and I took the driftwood out and there he was inside it just as dead as a door knob.

Would the second photo have anything to with it.

Good closeups it pays to have the camera at the ready.

I have a driftwood in my tank (OK its actually fake, I got it at Petsmart) that is hollow with all kinds of nooks and crannies. Petey, my rubbernose pleco loves it and moved right in as soon as I put him in the tank. I still see him from time to time cleaning the glass, but for the most part he really enjoys the innards of his home. What I don't like however is that it takes up a good chunk of the tank making its removal kinda necessary for vacuuming the gravel, and he stays inside the thing. good thing it holds water.
