My Amazon sword has sent out a little shoot that looked a little like a flower at first, but now the shoot has little "plantlets" on it that seem to be putting out roots. What should I do with it? should I break off the shoot and plant the little "plantlets" or what?

My platies have had tons of babies now my plnats seem to be following suit.

crazyred,

Yup, this are your first Amazon babies

Leave them on the stem until they have developed some leaves and sufficient roots that can hold it in the substrate. Then you just cut them off where they are connected to the stem and plant them

Thanks crazyred,

I love you too

The only reason I know this about the plant is because I once purchased a plant in the store without knowing what it was, and it actually was just a baby sword stem without the actual Amazon sword. I planted it in a corner and wondered why this thing is not doing anything . All it did was get one or two more babies on the stem, then it stopped (no wonder - there was no mother to provide the food). I ended up throwing it out because all babies died, I let them on the stem until they withered away.

Hi,
As the runner lengthens you can gently lay it down so
that it rests on the gravel and at the point where the
new plant is budding gently weigh it down so that the
bud is also resting on the gravel. One the new plant
is about 3-4 inches tall, you can clip the runner on
either side of the new plant leaving about a 1/4 to a 1/2
inch of runner on either side of the new plant.

Or, you can let the runner continue to grow along the
surface of the gravel and it will form new plants along
it as it grows.

If you do not decide to cut the runner and that new plant sends out a runner and you also do not cut it you will find out that as each plant matures it will not develop as much as the origional plant. Saving that it is advisable to cut the runner once the new plant has established its self.

Thanks y'all! I'm now a fish grandma AND a plant grandma!! Just makes me feel so warm and fuzzy. I think I will lay that runner down and let the babies take root....I've got a great spot for them.
