I'm just aquiring some new "non plastic" plants. Tell me, just like qting a new fish should same be done with live plants? I often see plants being kept in tanks with fish, in F stores, what if they have a bacterial or parasidic infections like ick ? can the plants infect the new tank? Just being cautious.... Barb

I suppose it's possible but highly highly unlikely.

Having used hundreds of plants over the years I've never felt the need to either treat or QT plants.

The huge immediate benefits of healthy plants in a tank outstrip any remote dangers by an enormous margin.

Some days you're the pigeon and some days you're the statue.

Remember that age and treachery will always triumph over youth and ability.

Hi,
Plants themselves do not transmit diseases or parasites
into the tank. Generally speaking is is the water that
the plants are in that transports disease and parasites
to another tank. What plants will transport is critters
and their eggs that are in the root system, trapped
at the crown between leaves, or attached to the leaves
themselves.
Always clean plants under running water at the same temp
as your tank water. Remove any dead or dying leaves and
remove any dead decaying roots. Healthy roots are white
and firm. Soft, mushy brown or black roots should be
removed. Feel along each leaf for egg sacks usually
jelly like "bumps" along the surface of the leaf.
With the leaf between your thumb and forefinger, rub
them off with your thumb.
The running water will rinse away the disease and
parasites.

Some folks will soak their new plants in a mixture of
bleach and water, others use a potassium permanganate
solution, while others will use a salt water bath.
Personally, I use only running water over the kitchen
sink.

Frank

I agree with Bernard it would have to be on the water on the plants and a good rinsing usually solves this problem. If the plants had snails then it is/could be a posibility.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
