We found a beautiful piece of driftwood. When we cut it to fit the aquarium we found that the wood is red and smells faintly of cedar. I know that I buy cedar bedding for my dog kennels BECAUSE of the natural insect repellant in cedar. I really, really want to use this piece in my aquarium and any information or opinions that anyone may have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ~Sandi |

Cedar wood that has been submerged in a bog or river for years makes good wood for tanks, but fresh cedar would likely kill your fish. It seems odd that something that occurrs naturally in the wild woudln't work in the microcosm that is an aquarium... ![]() Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean... |

Usually everybody add Drift wood or Big wood, that have been waterlogged for some years. I also think that fresh wood, would be really hard to get waterlogged. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzaqq/ http://www.deathbydyeing.org/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

Even submeged wood is a risk because you dont know how long it was submerged for. Expecially if you can smell the cedar. Dont use it. 20 Gallon Long: Aquaclear 300 2 Bolivian Rams, Mikrogeophagus altispinosus: Gumby and Pokey |

Cedar has a very distinct smell. It is naturally very resistant to water/moisture bacteria. Though over a period of time algae will grow on it if it is continualy under water. If it is such a beautiful piece of DW I would clean it and give it a good natural polish finish. I would not use it in a fish tank.
