Hi,
I got given some plants by the lovely wholesaler man at work a few weeks ago, only he didnt tell me what they were!!! We were too busy chatting and he rushed off. I havent been in the shop when he's been in since.
These arent plants that the shop keeps, owner has no clue what they are.
Could you guys help me out? They seem to be doing well so far.

Thanks.

Hi Lindy

They are both plants of the genus Hydrocotyle.

The first, 99% sure it's Hydrocotyle leucocephala, commonly known as Brazilian Pennywort. Great floating plant, my gourami love it. It will spread across the surface like lily pads, regardless of whether or not it's planted ot left floating. It's also a great fast growing nutrient sucker.

The second, 75% sure that's Hydrocotyle verticillata. Leaf shape is similar to the first, but as far as I know it only has one main leaf on top, and grows up tall like a big clover.

Man,

For once there is actually a plant that I can identify, and NowherMan6 gets to it first.

Darn

So, I have no other choice then to second him. Althoug, it could be that the second is the same than the first (I would say 20% chance), just younger.

These plants grow very fast in a high tech tank. I found that one branch (of the first one) that I put in my 2wpg 20G Long low tech tank did well for a few weeks, but then started to stall.

Pennywort does indeed grow very fast. I have a 2.5 gallon tank that I'm turning slowly into a planted nano tank, but for now is being used as clippings storage. It has only a 9W bulb over it, so not much light. I put one branch of Pennywort in there to float and for a while it didn't do much, but suddenly took off. It is clearly a marsh plant, because it was soon growing up out of the water and over the side of the tank - actually, right in the direction of a nearby desk lamp! Very nice interest plant. Wouldn't go crazy planting it in a huge bush, but it definetely has a place in my tanks

My halfbeaks and panchax love this plant. This pic shows you how it's going to grow in your tank Lindy. It will sit on the top with the roots hanging under. BTW love your driftwood.

Thanks for the replies. They are definately different plants. The first one I've had to trim because it was getting wild. The other has stayed in a neat bundle not needing any attention.
