Hiya

Just want to ask how can I attach Java Fern 'Crested' onto Terracotta pots and also what requirements do they require to keep healthy.

I also want to ask...how come these plants are more expensive than the normal Java Fern? The normals cost $5 a bunch when the cresteds cost $20-$25 a piece!

Regards

I'm not sure I know what you mean by 'crested.' I tried googling it, but couldn't find a picture. Is it anything like the lace java fern: http://aquariumplant.com/cgi-bin/cart/mi079.html
If it is, then it's more expensive simply because it's a special strain created in nururies and not found in the wild, therefore, it's less abundant.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

Yes, that is the plant im talking about. Throughtout Aus its quite expensive for a plant and not many LFS gets them in, only when you order it.

Just tie it on. It'll take a long time but the plant might eventually attach itself. The Windelov Java Fern is a rhizome plant. Some dealers are beginning to sell just the leaves of Java Ferns. Make sure you have a proper plant. A good thing about this plant is that it sprouts little baby plants on its leaves. You can remove these little plants and wedge it in cracks/gaps in wood or rocks. Java Fern grow slowly and have low light requirements. Doesn't mean they don't need light though! Where I am (Malaysia), Java Fern is plentiful. Every dealer has it. What they do is attach the plants to wood and then charge a ridiculous (to me) price for it. Some thing like RM15 which is about 4 U.S. dollars. There seems to be more of the Windelov variety as well. Loose plants are very affordable.

I have either the same variety or something very close. It is a very slow grower to start off with and can take some time to adhear itself to a rock or DW.

also want to ask...how come these plants are more expensive than the normal Java Fern? The normals cost $5 a bunch when the cresteds cost $20-$25 a piece!

Reason like most plants the more rare they are the more they cost. It could also be a newer variety, as well as a very slow grower and not easy to propergate.

Ok thanks very much

The plant itself came in potted. I removed the sponge thing and its a proper complete plant. Its already started to have baby plants on the leaves. The tank which the plant was housed in (@ LFS) had lots of Compact Fluros and Pressurized CO2 which was good. The normal Java Fern are going crazy in the holding tanks. If only the crested java fern was cheaper...Im sure I would have purchased more.
