Ok yesterday (Sunday) was the fish auction for the Houston Aquarium Society, and I kind of got overly excited and now have tons of java moss (it really didn't look like that much to begin with, really...not till i got home and found out the last bag, had at least 3 times the amount it looked like-about 4x the amount that you normally buy/ball) and then 2 other batches:%)

So that said here is the question:

I have some pvc pipe in the tanks for the bottom feeders, and they have grown to like them well enough. I want to take them out and coat them in small gravel, and was then thinking once that is "cured" and ready to go back into the tank, strapping some java moss to each piece (trust me I've got plenty:%)) would the java moss eventually attach itself to the pvc pipe coated in gravel? Or would it just float off once the whatever comes untied (I think one of my corries is good at knots) or rotted? Just a thought, I had last night looking the the java moss and pvc...

thanks, hml

I'm sure that the java moss will be able to attach itself to the cured pvc with rocks on it, especially if the gravel is somewhat larger and porous. If not, it will probably still get ahold eventually.

Try to get hold of some fine open mesh. Tie the moss down first then over that tie the open mesh it will be seen for a while until it establishes its self. This will give it an excellent base to grow from, as the moss will be able to grow through the mesh and give it extra to bind onto.

A cheap easy mesh if you cant get to a craft or fabric store is to use the bags that onions come in.
As for the PVC...I'd suggest scoring the surface a bit with some rough sand paper so that the silicone can stick better. Once the rocks are in place I suggest filling in the left over bits of space with some sand pressed into the silicone.
Java fern and moss will root themselves into rock, just not that securely.

Ok so I need like a fine mesh to wrap around the pvc to help hold down the java moss while it connects itself to the gravel and pvs...would something like hairnetting work? Of course I'd wash/boil/whatever it before using it...for some reason I'm not picturing the mesh/bag onions come in as being very fine, and good to tie over the java moss to grow throughunless I'm thinking of something elseI must be thinking of another sort of bagging that I've bought onions in, must be...can't be the clear baggies you can put them in at the store, and it sure can't be the bags that they are sold in when i bought them in presidio off the farms, both are too heavy duty I'll check out the hobby lobby and michael's that are close and see what i can find, or use the hair netting unless told otherwise...

When I get it finished I'll do pictures, just dont' expect anything too soon, too much going on right nowheidi

I'd think hair netting would be even wider of a weave than onion bags...maybe we have odd onion bags here but ours are about the same sized opening as is used in a tutu. Come to think of it that or tulle would be perfect, and you might not need all that much. I'd suggested the onion bag since they're food grade and thats what I'd used in my CO2 diffuser and had been planning on using for java moss on driftwood but mine managed to do just fine on it's own :%).

As far as I know, Java Moss will eventually attach itself into many things, PVC pipes included, given the right condition. I made several big tanks with external Wet/Dry system, and I had to cover the PVC outlet pipe, I usually just cover the pipe with the moss, tied it up with fishing lines, cover the pipe with fine mesh (I usually use the building net) and within 6 weeks or so I got a pillar of moss

Yes, i think it will be Ok with PVC pipes. You can use some fishing line to keep it attached.

Hi,
I suspect that the moss will not attach to the smooth
plastic walls of PVC pipe.
Here is a link to a site that should answer just about
anything you can ask about cultivating any of the mosses:

[link=http://www.nature-aquarium.com/home.htm]http://www.nature-aquarium.com/home.htm" style="COLOR: #FF00FF[/link]

Once you get over the initial shock, click on "Moss"
for answers to your question.

One look at this site started my heart thumping! The
information is complete, the pictures truly inspiring,
and its just plain awesome.

Well it did attach to the plastic of a soda bottle that I was using as a CO2 diffuser without having prepaired the surface @all. If the PVC were scored as I suggested I have a feeling that it'll make it much easier for it to attach.
