You could use something other than a rubberband. On one of mine I used fishing line, and on the other two I used a really dark green thread that blends in with the plant and driftwood. I like the thread better. It's up to you, but either one will def. be less noticeable than you rubber band.

Cotton thread will eventually break down and the Java fern will have taken hold by the time it does. If you use a poly-coton then you will have to cut it when the java is attached on it's own.

Java Fern is a slow grower even in the best of conditions.

That is the reason why I only use 15lb fishing line, and it must be tied tightly as the plant will not move and then it will take to the rock quicker. I have also found out that it will fasten its self faster to old established DW.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

It varies on how long it will actually take hold so it won't come off...

When I got mine, I just put a lead weight around the middle of it, and plopped it in a knot in my driftwood. It fell off a few times at first, but after a while, it started staying in place. About a month after it had last fallen off, I tried to pick it up to move it somewhere else (it didn't appear to have attached itself yet), and it gave quite a bit of resistance (enough so that it didn't come off when I hastily grabbed it), so I left it...

You're planting this in a cichlid tank? I'd give it at least 2 months before I trusted cichlids with it. If it's in a normal planted tank with small fish that won't try to murder the plant, about a month or a little longer before you remove whatever is holding it on... a little longer if you have low light...
