First I'm in the middle of tank cleaning so please excuse the algae, water spots, etc

I'm trying to ID this plant. I bought them some time ago for another tank, they recently made the move to my 30g where they are doing well with my anubias. I'm no plant expert, all I can tell you is that they are root plants, not rhizome. It might be difficult to see in the pic but there are two, the shorter is almost directly in front of the other.

Thanks

Theresa,

Very nice picture

I really suck at the "Name that Plant" game , but I think it is some form of Echinodorus (Sword).

Hi,
I agree it is one of the Echinodorus family.
I suspect it could be either Echinodorus cordifolius
or Echinodorus nymphaeifolius. Because of the shape
and veins visible in the one leaf facing us in the
picture, I suspect it is the latter (nymphaeifolius)

Looks like cryptocoryne pontederiifolia:

I have one and it looks similar.

It is a cryptocoryne species. Ciliata, perhaps?

I agree it definately looks like a Cryptocorene rather then an Echinodorous. The stem and the way the new leaves are coming out.

I second C.pontederiifolia, it looks a bit small for ciliata.

Hi,
Wouldn't it be nice if we really knew?

This is the picture of the crypt that I downloaded when
you suggested it Ben. I don't think it is the same plant
especially when you look at the juncture of the leaf and
stem:
http://www.wschowa.com/abrimaal/araceum/cryptocoryne/ponted.htm

Did you find a picture of the same plant with a different
leaf/stem that was similar to the one in question?

Could it be e. blehri? bad spelling but here's a link to tropica where I found this...
http://www.tropica.com/default.asp

scroll down until you find it, I almost had it right, it is e. bleheri, there all better.

It looks very similar.

Hi Frank,

What I meant by the leaf/stem is that Crypts and swords differ in the way they produce a new leaf.

Swords will produce a new stem directly from the crown a complete indivdual if you will. Crypts actually can have more then one leaf on the same stem. But the "join" is so low down the plant and so close to the crown that most don't actually see or realise this. In Theresa's pic it looks like crypt growth to me. But she can confirm this by physically checking the plant.

I'm pretty sure it's a crypt, whether or not it's definately ponderiifolia I'm not anywhere near 100% sure. Crypts are among the most difficult to identify and really the only sure way to tell is from a flower.

It's definately not E.Bleheri which is the scientific name for Amazon Sword.

I think I sort of found the answer. I posed early last month looking for some taller plant suggestions (anubias, crypts)...I don't know if it's correct or not but these two are what were sold to me as C. cilata.
