I wanted to share pics of the nano I set up tonight.

Specs:

2 gallon used Eclipse "Explorer" tank - freebie
Lighting: 20W Halogen desk lamp from Ikea ($10 - the Tropica Aquacube system uses a 20W Halogen lamp over a similar sized tank)
DIY CO2: I used a 600 mL water bottle and the diffuser is just an unused cigarette filter jammed into the end of the airline tubing with a plant weight wrapped around it. I get about 30-40 ppm CO2 with this setup.
Substrate: Laterite base, Aquarium Pharmaceuticals root tabs, 2 mm gravel
Ferts: KNO3, KH2PO4, K2SO4, Plantex

Plants: Elatine triandra, Hemianthus callitrichoides
Decor: Rocks collected around Lake Erie

I know it's blown out from the flash but I took a picture so you could see the setup with the DIY CO2 and lamp:

The tank:

It was just set up so it doesn't look great yet but I think it should be alright once it settles in. Eventually I think I'll keep some cherry shrimp in there.

What colour of background would you all suggest for this tank?

That should look very interesting when it is fully developed.

I like it Keep us update with pics as it progresses.

Background...I'm not sure, I always tend to go with black but I think that would be a good contrast with the rocks.

If you're getting shrimp to put in there, a black background really sets them off nicely. You'll also want some kind of cover for it, because shrimp will jump out if they can.
I think this little tank will look lovely.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

I kinda like the color it looks now with the blue wall in the back. Maybe a medium-dark blue background.

Tryst,

Yes, truely will be a lovely beautiful tank. Should we call you now Mrs. Amano?

One suggestion, I would remove the smaller front-middle stone to enforce the impression of a "path" that goes all the way from front to back.

Nice job,

Very nice indeed, priestess, can't wait to see it once the plants grow in earnest.

I was messing around with lighting and stuff and took a few pics. I also moved the rock in the middle of the scape because it felt like my eye was resting on it as I looked at it. I *think* it looks better with the new angle. These will also help give a better idea of what the tank will look like with different backgrounds on it.

If only I had a better cam.

Pardon the little laterite bit that somehow escaped the substrate.

By the way thanks for the comments. HC and Elatine triandra grow really quickly for me so far so it shouldn't take too long to fill in. They have a reputation as being somewhat difficult plants but I can't figure it out. They both grow like weeds and already have new leaves after planting yesterday. :%)

Ishiwigiwogi

Actually it's a really sad attempt at "Iwagumi." I am no Zen Buddhist. You almost have to be one to plant each "]:|" individual stem of HC and plantlet of elatine in a newly laid and fluffy substrate without getting frustrated though. I love those plants but hate them at the same time.
