I bought a bunch of stem plants today that the LFS referred to as "pink baby tears". Has anyone ever heard of an aquarium plant by this common name? Anyone know the scientific name?

One of the few references that I have been able to find for the common name is this site, which doesn't provide much info and although the colouration is close doesn't appear to be the same as the plant I bought today.

My plants have shorter, rounder leaves which seem to grow in sets of 3 per 'node' (not sure if that's the right term).

I'll try to get a pic tomorrow once the water is a bit clearer if that helps with an ID (rescaping today stirred up a bit of muck).

Thanks for your help.

Hi Trop,
The true name is: Hemianthus micranthemoides
Frequently called Baby Tears, it should have very
intense light 3+watts/gallon, be grown out in the
open, and have injected CO2. Under intense light
it will have pink leaves.

I came across that plant when I was looking for a backing plant for the Betta tank after doing a little research I soon discovered there were easier plants to grow around.

I have also seen it at A LFS

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Thanks for the comments guys.

I'm still not sure if what I have is Hemianthus micranthemoides. The leaves on my plant look a little larger and it does not appear inclined to carpet, but these could be influenced by environmental factors. If it is Hemianthus micranthemoides it should do OK in this situation (high light, liquid ferts & excel for carbon).

I have taken some pics today - maybe these can help to confirm the ID. Unfortunately the pink / red is not showing up true.

That's the one, and I hope they do well for you

It's common name is 'Baby Tears'. The fishstore trying to put a fancy spin on the name. Cool plant just the same.

It's non-aquatic form is kept commonly as a houseplant.

I may try and get some of this and see if it does any good in a 2wpg low tech.

Cool, thanks for the confirmation MossMan.

So far it has been doing well - almost too well in fact. It has been in the tank for about 10 days and I have needed to trim it twice in that time as the tops of the plant were extending above the surface of the water.
