Plants in sand are difficult. The sand grains are too light to effectively anchor plants and the silica quartz is reasonably sterile of anything that a plant needs for growth.

You may want to insert fertilizer tabs beneath any plant that you place in the sand. A good alternative would be attaching anubias, java fern or java moss to rocks or wood in your set-up.

If you have not put the substrate into your aquarium, then you might try laterite or fluorite as a base substrate. Laterite and fluorite will provide minerals for the plants. Unfortunately, the grains are larger than sand grains and in the aquarium small grains shift downwards so you will get a noticeable mix of substrates.

Hi,
Try this plant: Lilaeopsis brasiliensis
It is sold in "squares" and should be planted with tweezers in the sand a few plants at a time. You can find out more about it at Tropica or Arizona Gardens.
The root system is so small it has trouble rooting in regular aquarium gravel, and needs sand or soil.

As for the rocks, I've got some java fern going as well as java moss. Time to get anubias started
