Hi juwel-180,

Here comes the all important question: What lights do you have? Wattage and, if you know, the K rating (otherwise maybe at least the name).

Plants need certain light conditions to thrive and some do better in lower light than others.

So, before I shoot some plant names at you, please answer the question .

Ingo

And while we are at it, do you have any knowledge on plant fertilizers (they need food, too)?

Hi,
Personally I'd like to know more about your tank,
especially the "good" light. What kind of light is it?
How strong is it?

Plants are generally divided into several groups.
Floating or non floating, stem or bunch, and by their
light requirements, among but a few categories.

As a general rule of thumb, we class plants as low, medium,
and high light, demand plants.

Low light plants are generally plants that live along the
stream banks that are heavily overgrown by trees and
bushes. This overgrowth and jungle canopy restricts the
light that they receive and tanks with 1 to 2 watts of
light per gallon is considered low light.

Medium light plants are more exposed to sunlight have
less of an overhead canopy, or breaks in the overgrowth
that allows some direct sunlight exposure, for a short
time ( a couple of hours or so) and these plants would
require around 2 to 3 watts per gallon of light.

High demand plants are plants that generally grow out in
the open and have direct sunlight exposure for the whole
day, or nearly the whole day. These plants would require
3+ watts per gallon for the entire 10 hour "day" in the
aquarium.

You can figure out the watts per gallon (wpg) for your
tank by reading the bulbs that you use to light it.
Add up the total wattage of the bulbs and then divide
that amount by the capacity of the tank.
For instance: two, 40 watt, fluorescent bulbs would be
80 watts, divided by 20G would be 4 watts per gallon.

Once you figure out what your wpg is, then you can go to
sites like Tropica, Arizona Gardens, or Big Al's, and
look at their plants or plant packages. Each plant is
listed with the conditions favorable for its growth and
included in those conditions, is the plants light
requirements. Make up a list, of plants that would fit
your circumstances, and then you can either purchase them
from your local fish store, or order them from those sites.

Hope this helps...
Frank

My best suggestion is to go to http://www.tropica.com. Click on the ADVANCED SEARCH button in the upper right corner. It will take you to a screen that you can complete with your tank, light and substrate parameters. The search will suggest plants by height for your particular conditions and allow you to access pictures and information about each plant. One of the coolest plant thingies on the web!
