Removing beard algae? | |
Kellyjhw Big Fish My bubble... Posts: 405 Kudos: 217 Votes: 471 Registered: 22-Nov-2008 | I remembered my question! I've removed the beard algae from most of my ornaments. Now, it's trying to take over my anubia. The stem plants, I don't have much problem with. Since, I can trim off the covered parts and let them resprout, it doesn't bother me so much. My rocks and cave are fuzzy but cute. It irritates me that it has gotten a hold of my anubia. I don't have one jot on the crypt, but it's all over the anubia. How do I get it off without scalping it or pruning it down to nothing but 2 new leaves and the rhizome? Sorry for any mispellings or grammar issues, it's late and I've had a cocktail or two. I got very lazy and hadn't been trimming the frill and cambomba like I should have. I will also make a regular schedule for liquid ferts. I also will keep a tighter reign on the filter. I did squeezings last week and found quite a few snail eggs and babies in there. My husband had me purchase a 48inch air rod about a week or 2 ago. So that should also eliminate dead spots. Thanks to the link I realized we had a small amount of surface film algae. Thanks to the spray bar, I don't see it anymore. Funny thing about the pond snails, my husband likes them. All of the Apple Snails have died, but the pond snails are just chugging along. He admires the resilience. He called the apple snails (to put it mildly) whimps. My Golden Angel is fat with eggs, the liquid ferts won't bother her or the eggs when she decides to lay will it? TTFN --->Ta-Ta-For-Now Kelly ;o} |

FRANK Moderator Posts: 5108 Kudos: 5263 Votes: 1690 Registered: 28-Dec-2002 | Hi, I'm glad that it helped out. Surface scum is frequently found in aquariums. Generally it is the result of an incomplete or missing cover over the top. That absence will allow smoke of any kind (greasy smoke from broiling or frying, or cigarette or pipe smoke, as well as dust to accumulate on the surface) and create a scum. Additionally, certain fish foods are thick with fish oils and that increases the likelihood of a scum buildup. Redirecting the spray bar from the filter or installing an air stone or wand as you have, will break that scum up and the particles will settle to the tank bottom where gravel vacuum cleaning will remove it. No, the addition of fertilizer will not hurt the angel fish. I just would not overdo the dosage, I'd keep it on the "thin" side. As far as the Apple Snails are concerned, they are a little more finicky about their water quality than the run of the mill pond snails who think that they've died and gone to snail heaven being in that tropical tank vs the the cold pond with wildly fluctuating temperatures and things that eat snails. If you decide that you want to try them again, here is a site I suggest you might find interesting and informative. http://www.applesnail.net/ Frank -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |
