I guess it would depend on both what kind of plants and what type of algae we are discussing. Some algae can easily be scraped of but I suppose that´s not what we´ve got here. If the plant is fairly tough you might be able to put it in some bleach (Klorin) for a while, rather weak concentration 1:20 or so, but I´m not sure if it will actually kill most kinds of algae or not. Might be worth a try, don´t forget to rinse well! The toughest ones, I´ve tried it with Anubias, can be stored away in a plastic bag with some moisture in a dark place for a month or two and by then the algae ought to be dead but the Anubias will get right back in business. If you mention what types of plants and algae it is there might be someone with experience of those in particular who will be able to give you a better answer. |

Both tanks had plants and ornaments covered in algae. After a week I'm able to see the green of leaves and the actual colour of the castle! The little ottos eat a lot of algae and ignore everything else. I would add the plants to a tank with them in it or buy some for the tank they are going in. Scraping the algae off may damage the plant and any chemicals that will kill algae will probably kill the plant as well. Certainly more info is required a plant list and the water peramiters also the lighting used.
