I've tried hornwort, anacharis, and salvinia as floaters and I'd like to try something new for 2, possibly 3 tanks. Two are community tanks with low-medium lighting, the other is a grow-out tank with medium lighting. No co2 and I use Excel.

So my choices are water lettuce, water sprite, or riccia. Which would you choose, and why?

Thanks

Hi,
I would try either the Sprite or Lettuce. The Riccia
requires more light than you are offering.

Water Lettuce, I've had this before and they are kinda like salvinia but smaller and more 'delicate'..

I'm not familiar with riccia personally but if you are FLOATING it, it should be ok in your light, since it would be RIGHT under them. Frank, thoughts ?

Water Sprite should grow well under those conditions. Dont buy much as it grows very fast.

Theresa,

I thought of another, only because a friend of mine bought some at an auction and I'm trying to talk her out of 'a little bit' so I can try it.

Amazon Frogbit

Very similar to water lettuce, but even smaller I think.

Frog bit needs strong lighting, at least stronger than I think you are using. The water lettuce will need stronger lighting as well. These will both live, but not grow very well nor prosper very well. The new babies will stay small and not grow large. And may even perrish. The water lettece will grow tall if given enough lighting, and thus will need room on top of the tank, where as the frog bit will stay flat. Frog bit resembles very large duck weed. But is much nicer than duck weed, and easier to rid yourself of, as it does not take over.

Depending on what use you are using it for, is more of the question I would be looking for. As water lettece, if given the proper lighting and such, will have roots that extend as much as a couple of feet deep. And they are "fluffy" looking with small roots growing out each shaft. Great for spawning purposes, as well as great hiding for newly born fry. The Frog bit has short, just a couple inches to maybe a foot of roots. And they are more "non fluffy" looking single shafts.

HTH...
