i had 2 used magnum 350's but had problems so i took them to the lfs, we couldnt find the problem. so i got a proaquatic canister 2400, and ive have had no problems for four months and i have two 10 inch oscars and a 12inch pleco, so i would go with the 2400

but it cost about $150.00

good luck!

If you want an excellent job then get an Eheim.

They have two models
2126 for the 90 Gall 251 US Gph
2028 for the 125 Gall 277 US Gph

Not the cheap end of the market but the best there is.

Fluval makes for a darn fine filter as well. I am currently setting up a 90g tank and am going to put a fluval 403 - 350gph, and another filter in september, either a fluval 204,304, or 404, depending on which one goes on sale that month. I would like to have a minimum of 500gph turnover rate on a tank that size. I would highly reccomend the fluval 04 series filters, they work great, are easy to maintain, and allow for many different media options.

180 gallon is so much better than the 125. It really is. That's all I have to say about it...

First, buy the bigest tank you can afford because no matter how big of a tank you get, it wont be big enough, unles you're one of those multiple tank people If you can afford a little more, consider getting a 135. Same footprint as a 125 only a little taller.
A 125 gallon is a good candidate for drilling and plumbing through the bottom. For my 300g I use a pair of 1200gph pumps connected to a pair of large Ocean-Vu cannisters. This allows for great flexability in filter media and is expandable to include UV sterilizers and in-line heaters. The only plumbing that shows in my tank are the tops of the drain screens. The returns are capped with serpentine pipes hidden in the tank decoration.
I've never used Eheim filters, but I hear great things about them. Like the seperate pump/filter set-up, not cheap, but very good.
I used to have a Fluval cannister on 65g corner. It did a good job, but was messy to clean. This was several years ago so I can imagine there have been improvements on the design.
Other options are hang on back (hob) filters and undergravel filters. I used a pair of hob on a 55g but was never happy with them. A co-worker has an under gravel filter with 4 power heads in his 125g and swears by it. But then he also does a lot of gravel vac'ing. Hope this helps

IMO that's not much use. You can't keep any more kinds of fish in a tank that's simply taller than a tank as dep as a 125 gallon already is.

Sounds like a prime candidate for a sump system, especially if you're going to do the typical mbuna overstock.

I have a 125 gal/6ft long tank in my bedroom and love it. I forget the model of the filter, but it's got two bio wheels on either side of the intake.. works FINE for most but wasn't enough when I had my Oscars in the tank. I'd definitely suggest some major filtration for Cichlids.

I'd go more than 700gph for africans...try to get around 1000gph. I currently have about 500gph on my 120g mbuna tank, but it's understocked. I'm waiting for a Fluval 404 to arrive, and that will increase it to about 900gph. Then I'll get more fish!
