I currently have a 20 gallon hex which I'm setting up and would like to place live plants in it. Will probably have to be of a lower light variety as to the lighting limitations this tank has. Will have a nice piece of drift wood that I can attach plants to also.

The standard lighting is a 12" flourescent which is very limited on its output.

Any suggestions as to what I can do to improve on this?

If need be I can make a full plexiglas top for it which would allow for some additional lighting, but not positive how to mount the lighting to the tank. I won't be able to hang a light from the ceiling or mount to the wall so need some other suggestions.

Jim

I'm not sure about the wattage, but have you looked at some of the fluorescent ring lamps? I've seen desk lamps that use them. You could probably get at least 1 wpg.

I've also seen mini compact fluorescent fixtures like this one: http://www.thatpetplace.com/Products/KW/F52/Class/Fish+Supplies+Lighting+Fixtures/T1/F52+0047+0870/EDP/39453/Itemdy00.aspx

Perhaps two of those, or a similar diy retrofit would work.

If you're interested in plants with high light requirements, a single metal halide pendant may be the way to go.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

I think that light just might work. It will give me close to 1 wpg which should be sufficient for the lower light plants I plan on using in this tank. Thanks for the info.
