Aquarium Hood Upgrade Opinion Request | |
clippers1996 Fingerling Posts: 25 Kudos: 10 Votes: 14 Registered: 10-Oct-2004 | Ok All! Need some opinions: 5 year old 29 gallon with perfecto hood, all back plastic with single tube flourescent (Fish Only). I want a light/hood that accents the tank and reduces the "yellowness" and shadowy look of the tanks in all but extreme darkness. Alot of the tanks here in S. Florida have glass covers instead of a hood, I'd imagine due to the sheer number of SW aquariums down here. Which makes me think 2 sets of lights are practical. Basically I'd like to go with the 2 bulb lights with high quality reflectors and something that would seal better than my current setup. I use an emporer 280 HOB, eheim aquaball, jager heater and not much else. I've tried the high actinic blue spectrum lights (I know) for the looks. Overall I liked the looks but maybe tone it down a notch. Any suggestions on getting the yellow out and making my fish look their best? |

I dickered with them when I purchased it and managed to get them to toss the actinic blue bulb out and replace it with a second daylight bulb. There are two power cords and two switches, one for each bulb. One of the switches also turns on the cooling fan. I run the one bulb and fan for 10 hours/day and have the second bulb set to come on in the middle of the 10 hour day for two hours to simulate the peak of the noon day sun. I replace the bulbs annually by tossing the one that is on 10hrs/day and moving the second bulb into its socket, then I put the newly purchased bulb in the two hour socket.
