I bought one of the new kind about six months ago for a ten gallon, but moved it to my new twenty long. I have had nothing but problems with this thing. It does not start up after a water change/cleaning like it should and stops entirely without provocation - lucky I have not lost fish with it.
Today, I could only get it to filter for a few seconds, then it would quit - finally gave up and sent it to the garage. Fortunately, I had been running two filters on the 20, so it is not an issue (an older model bio-wheel that works). It tries to work, so it is not the motor - it just won't. Is there anything that can be done for this clunker, or should I just junk it?

Is it clogged in any manner? You may want to try taking it apart completely, cleaning the impeller and impeller shaft really well and give it another try.

Check to make sure that the impeller shaft isn't bent or damaged as this can cause the impeller to not turn properly. You want to make sure that it it seated well in the housing also.

I have used Bio Wheels in the past and found that when my wheels stopped spinning, the filter pads needed cleaning/replacing. The actual filter itself also require regular cleaning.

Another thing with the Bio Wheels is that if the wheel stops spinning, half of the wheel will dry out which leaves the bottom half still wet. When it is like this, it makes it hard for the wheel to spin (lop sided). Maunally spin the wheel a few times until the whole wheel is wet....

Sounds like a complete pull down and a good cleaning. If it still does not work I would toss it out. Also check the impeller to make sure it is in good order and spins freely I always clean mine with a soft tooth brush.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Thank you for your replys - sorry it has taken me a few days to get back on it.
The filter uptake does not seem to have enough power to get the thing started. When it does work the wheel turns fine. I have tryed taking the filter out to get it started - have shook it, poured water in it, everything. It is not clogged, it is in pristine, like new (only about six months), condition. I am just going to scrap it and use the old bio-wheel that works (have no problem with the four year old one). I guess it was a "lemon" when I got it, since I have had nothing but problems with it from the very beginning.
Thank you anyway.

Fallout,
I had not even thought about that - you can order/buy those separate and not have to buy the whole filter? That did seem to be the problems (it made a horrible noise).

Yep, your LFS should have a wide selection and one in stock. If it made a terrible noise, either it was off balance, a part was deformed or just plain broken. They're 7-12 bucks at your LFS
