So, I noticed recently that one of my HOB filters was making more noise than usual. When it didn't quiet down after a day or so, I tore the filter apart and what did I find? One of the rubber rings that suspend on the impeller on the metal shaft was completely gone!

So, one week later I have a new impeller in place and it's working beautifully...and silently.

Has anyone else had this happen? Oh, I should probably mention that I have a sand substrate in that tank.

At a good guess I would say the fine particals of the sand acted as an abrasive hence no rubber.

That was my thought too, so I shortened the intake tube to get the intake further away from the sand.

Another thing you might consider doing is placing a sponge prefilter over the intake strainer. Helps keep sand out of the impeller.

After killing a few impellers I finally got the powerhead placed right and the intake covered....not very well of course because it's just a trickle flowing out but it's covered all the same {note to self, change intake cover}.....in any case cover your intake....You might want something a bit finer than a sponge though .
