Now THAT's what I call a piece of driftwood! Not many have "logs" in their tanks. Frank -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |

dan76 Big Fish Always Reading Posts Posts: 343 Registered: 08-Jul-2003 | frank , the tank is ply and glass , just in a black surround, as for the log i had to take the stays off to get it in the tank. one of the bonus things about living in the bush is being able to go out to the river or creek and pick up wood and take it home. i have some pretty big tablelands near where i live so the creeks only run after rain, so if i go out and get wood when it hasnt rained for a few months i get presoaked wood with no living nasties in them. here is a pic from chrissy when we had a bushfire |

FRANK Moderator Posts: 5108 Kudos: 5263 Votes: 1690 Registered: 28-Dec-2002 | Hi Dan, Thanks for the comment. I gotta have a tank big enuff to take a log for apiece of drift wood! Great picture of the neighborhood and I understand the danger of the grass fires. We have problems with them all the time and one of them created the largest fire in the state. It burned over 138,000 acres and came within a mile of our home. We sat out on the deck listening to the scanner, and watching the slurry bombers. If the fire had jumped the road they were using as a fire break we would have had to evacuate immediately. I noticed towers off in the distance are they communications towers, windmill towers for pumping water, or supports for high tension wires going across country? I was with you all the way, till you said that the picture was from chrissy. What's a chrissy? Frank -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |

dan76 Big Fish Always Reading Posts Posts: 343 Registered: 08-Jul-2003 | sorry frank , i meant the pic was from this cristmas time that fire burned for a week or so and then we got a few big rainstorms that put it out, so pretty lucky. as for the towers they are high voltage lines for one of the many coal mines we have around here. the creek where i get most of my wood is hidden away in the middle of the pic but you cant really see it |

dan76 Big Fish Always Reading Posts Posts: 343 Registered: 08-Jul-2003 | the sump is up and running well, all that is needed is another bag of bio balls and a little more filter foam, its funny how the water in the tank doesnt have any noticeable tannin staining but in the sump you can see it, must be because of the black walls in the tank |

dan76 Big Fish Always Reading Posts Posts: 343 Registered: 08-Jul-2003 | this is my fluid bed filter , it has only been hooked up for about a week, i had to buy a new pump because the lift pump, 3800L/hr was not powerful enough. so i bought a 2800L/hr pump just for the FBF. |

FRANK Moderator Posts: 5108 Kudos: 5263 Votes: 1690 Registered: 28-Dec-2002 | Hi Dan, That is not what I expected to see when shown a fluid filter in action. I thought a fluidized filter would have the sand in suspension and frothing around inside the container. In your picture it seems to be sitting still and the water percolating through it as it would in any sand filter. What am I missing here? As an aside, I notice the running water flowing into the upper sections of the filter. How noisy is the tank in the room? Frank -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |

dan76 Big Fish Always Reading Posts Posts: 343 Registered: 08-Jul-2003 | when i looked at the pic on the pc i got a bit worried, i ended up going out to check the FBF was running, ha ha. but the filter was working fine, there is a slight dead spot but still heaps of movement. milky , i assume that the ends unscrew for you to change the media? what sort of sand are you going to use? i was surprised to see how big the particles are in the filter myself. frank, the tank is fairly quiet when the water level is corect , the foam pre filter softens a lot of the noise its when the water level drops and water falls out of the bio ball containers that it gets noisy. also my tanks are outside so noise isnt that big an issue. but to be honest i think the sump would be too loud to have inside unless you like water features( trickle noise) |

milkyboy Hobbyist Posts: 88 Kudos: 81 Votes: 4 Registered: 03-Dec-2005 | In regards to the FBF the instructions say.... Turn out Seperately the top cover and bottom cover, take out the filter materials in turn and clean them. I will try this now but I doubt it will work. Edit: I just tried it with no luck. Anyone got any ideas how to get tops or bottoms off? Edit 2: Got a friend to hold the cylinder and I screwed them off. You need lots of force to get them off. Milkyboy |

dan76 Big Fish Always Reading Posts Posts: 343 Registered: 08-Jul-2003 | to drill the holes for the overflows i had to lower the water level in the tank by a foot or so, the water was low for about a week and when i filled the tank up and was doing fine tuning on the spraybar etc i noticed that the silicone along the top seal where the glass is glued to the wood had given way. the wood along the top was twisted out that much i could put my thumb in the gap and the glass was only holding by the top edge. so a quick trip to the hardware store to get some clamps and stronger silicone and the temporary fix was done. i will have to get me here is a pic of what the tank looks like now |
