was just wondering if it's possible to use two bypass valves off a canister system to do water changes for a rather large tank?

That is any interesting idea. The only thing is if you are tanking water out away from the in then the pump will run dry. Maybe make a diagram of thoughts and post it for us to check out.

I think it "could" be done on certain canisters from the outlet hose providing the inlet tube is always below the water level.

What would be wrong in just using a seperate pump.

What size tank and how much water are you talking about.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

the idea would to just be able to turn the valve and have the output fork off to drain it on one side, with a bypass on the inflowing side to add water. the canister can go where ever i like it in terms of elevation. I'm thinking on this because i'm setting up a 120 gal discus tank, and i want to make water changes easier, depend on who you talk to it varies from 30% a week to 30% a day to keep discus properly.

Ok now that I have a visual with this I see a problem It seems that you would be pulling water out that you are just putting in. Sure some of the water would make the lope but it seems a large amount would be new water back out.

Maybe you should rig up a system like we have a work for our tanks. The basic idea is to have an overflow hole drilled in the tank and then just have a fill hose in it. As long as you don't let the overflow get pluged up it works great.

So if you are using RO water that you have fill a barrel then pump from the barrel to the tank and then the overflow to a drain.

If you want a picture I might be able to make you one up.

the idea wouldn't be to run both at the same time, drain it first, then add new water in- easy to do if you have two buckets the same size to measure with.

exactly, they key would be to divert the water that should go back into the tank from the filter out to the sink or where ever your putting it. then divert the water back into the tank.

then when your filling it, once you get where ever your pulling water from setup, divert the intake from the new source and switch back when complete
