Is this a better filter than my current aquaclear? I heard canisters are really great and this one is pretty inexpensive.

Or is this better?

You have made two statements here.
First "I heard canisters are really great"

Yes they certainly are for many reasons.

Secondly "this one is pretty inexpensive"

Before you do any thing just think why is it "Inexpensive" another word for cheap?

Possibly poor quality, no back up, and just a poor quality pump.

Stick to the well known and trusted brand name who have quality and standing in the field of filters.

I personally would not buy either I would be looking for a suitable Eheim. What size tank do you have?

Of those particular filters i think both will do the job if your tank is about 30 gallons, but i do believe the hot magnums have the ability to put a diatom filter paper in them which is a definite bonus for crystal clear water.

Gibson SG you know you want one!!

I agree with Keith that you should get the best you can afford. One area not to skimp on is your filtration system as it is so important to your water quality and a failed filter can be disastrous.
