This is an issue I'm bringing from the cichlid room, you can take alook to see the details. Anyways I was just wondering what the deal was with cannister filters, I was told that this was as issue with them:

"Cannister filters, like the 304, require a lot of oxygen in the water to work and the bacteria in their media pull a lot of oxygen out of the water to convert ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate."

If this is the case then I will move away from the cannister filter & try and get some type of bio wheel in the near future.

By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

Did this info come from the Uni of "They say"
To make any canister filter to work fully and corectly it must have a good flow of water through the medium in the canister. It is not how much water goes through the canister at a given time but how the medium works and isc it working efficiently.
With the bacteria you should always have the correct bacteria in the canister for it also to work efficiently.
This means that a good and origional bacteria should always be added at the water changes. Apprently bacteria does not have a long life span and it mutates its self.
This mutation is never the same as the origional and over the period of time it is nothing like it should be.
I always add a measured amount of bacteria at every water change for this reason.

When I had the major introduced water problem which killed a lot of my large CLs and other bottom feeders I was adding a live bacteria every second day to bring the good bacteria up again as it all had been killed by the imported water problem.
This info was also backed up by "Sera"
I am far from being chemically knowledged and can not give you all the chemical reasons on why and how it works but I do know it works.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
